Another of my favorites - Jim Croce
This brings back such memories of growing up. I've always liked his song even at a young age. Loved the words, the melody, the voice.

Too many Subscriptions - Magazine Covers
You know I realize that we have too many magazines coming to the house. Most of them gifts. I'm still trying to catch up on them. I did find this to be a nice cover of Alicia Keys. I think she is pretty, talented and keeps it positive. It is a pretty old cover - November 2007 Ebony Magazine.
On a side note - have you discovered the amount of junk mail you get once you start getting magazines via mail?

Have you heard of Trot music?
I've recently become familiar with it. Here's a definition via Wikipedia: Trot, pronounced as "teuroteu" in Korean (sometimes derisively called ppongjjak), is the oldest form of Korean pop music. It developed in the years before and during the Japanese occupation. Trot music has received criticism from nationalists, who allege that it derives from the Japanese music genre of enka, especially its scale. Defenders of trot, however, claim that it had begun to develop prior to the Japanese invasion, and simply developed in parallel with the Japanese style. The name itself derives from a shortening of "foxtrot", a ballroom dance which influenced the characteristic simple beat of the genre. This style of music has recently increased in popularity due to the emergence of "semi-trot" singers such as Jang Yoon Jeong (장윤정), who had great crossover success with her first single "어머나!" ("Eomeona!" - an exclamation similar to "Oh my goodness!"). This has led to both an increased awareness of older trot musicians and the debut of other singers and groups wanting to capitalize on the genre's comeback (including LPG and Super Junior-T).
I am believer in broadening your horizons. Every form of music may not be for you but that does not make it bad and it is nice to know about things outside of what you are use to.

From Jeopardy to Billie Holiday
One of the answers to Jeopardy last night was Billie Holiday and she's been on my mind ever since. Here is a clip that MonsieurBaudelaire was kind enough to upload to Youtube. It is Billie Holiday singing Strange Fruits live. Listen to the lyrics. They have meaning. Thoughts?

First Song of the Day: Ai Otsuka's Sakuranbo
We watched our "Tokyo Friends" DVD last night/early this morning and one of the stars was Ai Otsuka. I've always liked her song Planetarium but we don't have it so I went online in search of it. I did find a lot of Youtube clips of other people singing it but couldn't find one of her singing it. Fortunately, I came across this clip where she sings two of her songs - Planetarium being one of them. Since it shows her singing Sakuranbo first that became my First Song of the Day. Makes sense?

First Song of the Day - Hawaiian Couple
I actually first heard this song in a Tous Les Jours Bakery commercial featuring Goo Hye Sun & Jo In Sung. I loved it ever since. The song is sung by Humming Urban Stereo and I love their music. The songs are just easy to listen to, even with the language barrier (most of their songs are Korean).
Anyway, I was doing something online this morning and this song was playing in the background making it today's first song of the day. Found this clip on Youtube. Evidently the song has also been used on the OST for a Korean Movie

First Song of the Day: Ron Hogan's Many Beginnings
I received a myspace comment to check out some relatively new music and thought it was a good way to start the day.
You can check out Ron Hogan's myspace account where he has 6 songs listed. His genre on myspace is listed as Folk Rock / Fusion / Nu-Jazz.
Here is a bit of information from his page:
ALL CDs R Available @ cdbaby.com!!!!! Ron Hogan ***is a very prolific songwriter. He is just beginning his carreer as a song writer/recording artist by producing an incredible 4 single CDs and one Double CD in 11 mos. His first CD, the "Eye of the Storm" was released in December, 2006, followed by the "Eye of the Light" in February 2007, "End of the Open Mind " in May 2007 and the "Vision of the Wolf" in July 2007. The words and music to all the songs on the CDs have been written by him. He also plays acoustic rhythm guitar as well as a Korg Sampler (KARMA) on a few tracks on the "Eye of the Storm" , "Eye of the Light" , "Vision of the Wolf" and "Wings Have Eyes" CDs . He plays acoustic rhythm guitar exclusively on the "End of the Open Mind" CD. He has a backlog of songs that could fill many more CDs and he is writing songs at a feverish pace. He has just produced a DOUBLE CD for his next release entitled "Wings Have Eyes"! He relishes writing music and is fascinated with experimentation in words and sound. His joy is to create music that allows people to be absorbed in something new and original which can take them places they have never been or, haven't visited in a while. He adds a soulful touch to many of the songs with his vocals and his theatrical background is evident in the interpretation of the lyrics.
I encourage you to check his page and music out yourself. If you can leave him a comment or message to let him know what you think, and let us know what you think. I've added one of his songs to our myspace profile for a bit so you can also take a listen there.
Hope everyone is enjoying their NEW YEAR. Let this be the year you make a difference.

A New Year
I hope everyone is waking up and realizing that just the fact that you are alive to read this makes it a Happy New Year. Your year will be what you make of it. I know we are planning on having another year filled with music.
I encourage everyone to keep supporting local music and music in general. I know one thing I've always done but I have strengthen my resolve for is buying the CDs of local musicians. I was thinking about the times I hear live music, enjoy the band and they are selling a CD - most of the time for $10 or less and I think about getting it next time. Well I've decided to make sure I support them now. Besides I could get some value meal and spend about 10 bucks and have nothing to show for it after 15 minutes or have a CD that lets the band know I enjoyed them and I can relive the music over and over.
Just think about it.
