Gnarls Barkley

I have really been into Gnarls Barkley lately. I only heard one of
their songs,Crazy before but finally got to listen to their
St.Elsewhere CD. Although Crazy was a good song it's always hard to
judge a band off just one songHere is one of their songs from their
newest album,THE ODD COUPLE released digitally on March 18 and in
stores March 25, 2008:

L.A. Latin Jazz Festival - May 10, 2008

The L.A. Latin Jazz Festival 2008 Starring Eddie Palmieri plus The Latin Giants of Jazz (former members of Tito Puente Orchestra)
with invited guests Dave Valentin, Oreste Vilato, Alfredo De La Fe Plus The Jazz on the Latin Side All-Stars featuring Conga Master Francisco Aguabella

The Los Angeles Latin Jazz Festival will play the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles for an incredible night of music on Saturday, May 10th.

The date has been set and all the artists have been booked for the “Salsa meets Jazz” night, which will open the world famous Greek Theater’s season on May 10, featuring the Los Angeles Latin Jazz Festival 2008. The headliner for this year’s event is Pianist, Composer, arranger, nine (9) time Grammy Winner Eddie Palmieri. Mr. Palmieri will be performing his big band arrangements of his famous original compositions that have made him one of the most beloved Latin Jazz and Classic Salsa artists throughout the world for over fifty (50) years. Palmieri will perform his classic West Coast favorites (for listening and dancing) compositions like Vamonos pal Monte, Azucar pa Ti, Puerto Rico and Pa la Ocha Tambor among others.

The reunion of former members of the Tito Puente Orchestra “The Latin Giants of Jazz” for the first time in Los Angeles since the untimely passing of ‘El Rey” eight years ago is another highlight of this year’s show. Under the leadership of percussionist Johnny ‘Dandy” Rodriguez and musical direction of arranger, percussionist Jose Madera the other 15 plus year veterans of the Tito Puente Orchestra ( Mitch Froman, Lewis Kahn, Reynaldo Jorge, Pete Miranda and John Walsh among others) will perform music of ‘The King”. During the set The Latin Giants of Jazz will be joined by flautist Dave Valentin, timbale player Oreste Vilato and violinist Alfredo De La Fe who will appear as special invited guests.

Los Angeles local favorites The Jazz on the Latin Side All-Stars (who are keeping our big band Latin Music tradition alive) will perform the music that has made them a contender in global Jazz and Latin scene. Jose Rizo’s concept of uniting the best musicians in town to perform “Nuestra Musica” has turned out to be a hit in cities outside of Los Angeles. TJL All-Stars will pay a special salute to Master Congero Francisco Aguabella. Other artists will be confirmed for this special salute to el maestro.

The night will end with a jam session of all mother jam sessions.

R.I.P. Orish

founding member of 702

via Transworld:

Orish Grinstead, Founding 702 Member, Dies of Kidney Failure

Atlanta, GA 4/24/2008 03:27 PM GMT (FINDITT)

Orish Grinstead, a founding member of the R&B group 702, died of kidney failure Sunday in her Las Vegas home. Grinstead was 27 years old.

Grinstead also suffered from other medical complications including cancer that had yet to be treated.

Grinstead founded the group, named for the area code of their hometown Las Vegas, with her twin sister Irish and older sister Lameisha. The group was originally a quartet with Orish, Irish, Lameisha and their cousin Amelia.

However, Orish dropped out of the group, along with Amelia, and they were replaced with Kameelah Williams, a close friend who went to high school with Irish and Lameisha.

The R&B group went gold on their first album No Doubt (1997) and platinum on their second album 702 (1999), but during the second album, Lameisha had a baby and left the group, prompting Orish to replace her.

R.I.P. Paul Davis

I always liked this song.

sad to read this on CNN today:

'I Go Crazy' singer Paul Davis dies

JACKSON, Mississippi (AP) -- Paul Davis, a singer and songwriter whose soft rock hit "I Go Crazy" stayed on the charts for months after its release in 1977, died Tuesday. He was 60

Davis died of a heart attack at Rush Foundation Hospital in Meridian, the city where he grew up, cousin James Edwards said.

Davis' other popular hits included "65 Love Affair;" "You're Still New To Me," a country duet with Marie Osmond; and "Ride 'Em Cowboy."

His 1977 album "Singer of Songs -- Teller of Tales" featured the ballad "I Go Crazy." The song slowly climbed the charts, peaking at No. 7 eight months after its release, according to Billboard's Web site. The song stayed in the Top 100 for 40 weeks, according to Billboard -- a record at the time for the magazine's Hot 100 chart. The mark has since been surpassed many times; the current record holder is LeAnn Rimes' "How Do I Live," which stayed on the Hot 100 for 69 weeks.

Davis spent part of his early career in Jackson at Malaco Records, company President Tommy Couch said.

Couch said Davis arrived at Malaco with his writing partner, George Soule, around 1968

R.I.P. Al Wilson

via CNN:

FONTANA, California (AP) -- Al Wilson, the soul singer and songwriter who had a number of 1970s hits including "Show and Tell," has died. He was 68.

Wilson died Monday of kidney failure at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Fontana, according to his son, Tony Wilson of Yucaipa.

"He was always singing," his son said. "He would call me in the middle of the night with a new song that he had written."

Wilson was born on June 19, 1939, in Meridian, Mississippi. He sang in the church choir as a boy and had his own spiritual singing quartet. His family moved to San Bernardino in 1958 and he found work as a mail carrier, office clerk and janitor.

He toured for four years with the group Johnny "Legs" Harris and the Statesmen before joining the Navy. Following a two-year stint, he moved to Los Angeles and played with the Jewels and their successor group, the Rollers. A drummer, he also worked with the instrumental group the Souls.

In 1966, he was spotted by manager Marc Gordon, who introduced him to singer Johnny Rivers, who signed him to his Soul City label. Wilson's first single, "The Snake" in 1968, was a hit and was followed by "Do What You Gotta Do."

"Show and Tell" was released in 1973 and the next year was No. 1 on the Billboard Top 100 chart.

Wilson charted with several other 1970s singles, including "La La Peace Song," "I've Got a Feeling (We'll Be Seeing Each Other Again)" and "Count the Days."

Politics + Music

I like that people come together and express their support in various ways. I've always thought music is a powerful way to get ideas across. There is so many negative words in music that I look for those that say something positive. Agree or disagree - at least put an effort in what you believe
